Looking to make my extraordinary HP-LaserJet 6L on Windows 10 64 bit, I downloaded Microsoft driver update for HP LaserJet 6L, version 6.1.7233.0, 11.6 MB -> for AMD64 architecture for my laptop but still not working. Any other driver compatible that you believe works? Thanks.
As I had condemned the old HP Laserjet 6L printer and replaced it with a new printer, I cannot test it out. Please try the below steps:In Windows 10, please click "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Devices and Printers" > "Add a printer". On "Add Printer" pop up window, kindly click "The printer that I want isn't listed" > "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings" > "Use an existing port: LPT1: (Printer Port). (Assume the printer connection to your laptop is using parallel port, LPT1)Kindly click "Windows Update" and wait for about 10 minutes for the "Windows is updating the list of printers. This might take a few minutes." to complete. Kindly click "HP" manufacturer and scroll down the printers list to look for "HP Laserjet 6L" or "HP Laserjet 6L PS Class Driver", and click the "Next" button to install the HP Laserjet 6L printer drivers.
Download the HP LaserJet 6L Pro Printer Driver. After completing the download, insert the device into the computer and make sure that the cables and electrical connections are complete. After this, run the downloaded driver file to install and run the installation. It is important that the operating system is compatible when installing the driver. Please check immediately if your operating system is compatible.
For basic printing functionality use the HPIJS driver . For advanced functionality such as printer status and maintenance features, use the HPLIP driver (which includes HPIJS). Remember that the 6L is more like the LaserJet 4 family than the LaserJet 6 family (as with most "L" printers from HP). For example it does not work with the "lj5gray" drivers but only with the "ljet4" or "lj4dith" drivers (and also Gimp-Print and HPIJS). The layout is off center and slightly rotated when using Ghostscript. (could someone else please confirm this?) [Ed] I find the slight rotation bit hard to beleive, but until I head otherwise, I'll leave this printer where it is. The centering problem can be solved by simply adjusting the margins in Ghostscript. --- Works fine for me, with Ghostscript 5.50 and FreeBSD 3.2, and no special settings. /Karl-Johan Grahn Unfortunately, this printer has a little hardware problem: The paper separation pad hardens with the time and the printer pulls in several sheets of paper at once. HP is aware of this and offers a kit to fix this without needing to disassemble the printer for free. It can be ordered for delivery into any country via their web site.

HPIJS is HP's universal printer driver for most of their non-PostScript printers. It comes as a part of HPLIP, HP Linux Imaging and Printing. The supplied PPDs are provided by OpenPrinting.org and include PPDs for printers made by HP and printers made by other manufacturers. HP does not provide support for any non-HP printer.
Interesting is that -web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_3100.html tells the printer is supported with HPLIP version 0.9.5 or later. On the other hand _printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_3100 tells there is no proper support: "Reverse-engeneering efforts on the printer's protocol have already started, but were not finished. Anyone who makes this device finally working with free software please report on the the HP Forum here on OpenPrinting."

I am also trying to get the printer work in Linux. Is there any chance to use such a recent driver in ubuntu 8.04? (I have an install CD for that ubuntu release.) Currently I am using ubuntu 7.10 having HPLIP 2.7.7. Even there /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat file contains section "[hp_laserjet_3100]". I tried to install the printer using system-config-printer.py, that recognizes the printer as "HP LaserJet LPT parport0 HPLIP" (or that is at least one of the alternative devices to choose from), but there is no specific driver for the model in the list of HP drivers.

A driver which generates the data format which the printer needs is inside GPL Ghostscript. It is named "lj3100sw". You do not need to patch and compile Ghostscript. You can ignore the Ghostscript steps on and also the Ghostscript driver files in lj3100.tar.gz.
The printer is on the parallel port and works fine in Windows 2000 and almost fine on XP (occasional BSOD crashes). I first tried it with Fedora 12 on a 32-bit Intel single-core processor system. Fedora 12 uses hplip 3.9.8. It recognized the printer on the parallel port, but scanning and printing don't work. I tried the above steps to try to make it work. When I run sane, it shows the LJ3100 as an option when it starts, but then times out after several minutes and says it can't communicate with the printer. When I check the status via hp-toolbox, it says its ok but doesn't give the toner levels or any further information. I tried the three different parallel port options in BIOS (I think ECP, EPP, PS/2) with similar results. I ran hp-check, and it showed lots of packages missing. Then I tried downloading and compiling the lj3100.tar.gz package and running the lj3100_print routine on a different file (was not able to create the one indicated) with no luck. In order to correct the hp-check problems I tried installing hplip directly. I tried using the auto-installer to upgrade to 3.10.2. Running hp-check showed everything was ok. I gave up on this system when hp-setup wouldn't check for the printer on a parallel port (grayed out). I now realize I needed to compile the tar ball instead. I can restore the printer to this system and check more things, if desired. 2ff7e9595c
