Prostitution Whore!

OK, really Teresa Giudice's whole table flip speech should be here, because it's a work of art, this is just the most obvious choice. But for your own enjoyment: "I am paying attention! Obviously there has to be something else. It's just not name change and arrested. There has to be something else. Are you stripping? You were stripping. Prostitution whore! You were f--king engaged 19 times! You f--king stupid bitch!"

15. "The Last Leg," The Real Housewives of New York City There are certain moments in television that will never be forgotten. Aviva Drescher throwing her leg during yet another Real Housewives blowup is one of them. It's the moment when reality TV folded in on itself. It's prostitution whore 2.0, but without any authenticity and triple the delusion. It's a moment so premeditated that the reality of what we were watching -- a 44-year-old mother of four throwing her prosthetic leg at someone in the hopes of gaining fame -- is impossible to ignore. It made us laugh. It made us cry. It made us scared for what society has become. It was, in short, leg-endary.

Prostitution Whore!

The historiography of women in early modern Europe often exhibits a curious vacillation between depicting women through some form of proto-feminist lens to showing them as simply minor characters, a phenomenon often derisively referred to as "add women and stir." One of the most remarkable elements of Lotte van de Pol's slender volume is that it does neither of these, while still displaying a kind of empathy for her subjects that is not over-or under-shadowed by the social position of women and/or prostitutes in this century. In her introduction, Van de Pol acknowledges that prostitution enjoys a special legal protection in the present-day Netherlands but otherwise sets aside modern judgments in favor of a rich appreciation of a historical subculture that bears little, if any, relationship to the heavily touristed red light district of Amsterdam today.

Subculture is an appropriate word for, as the title suggests, van de Pol embeds her history of the (mostly) women who practiced the oldest profession deeply within the context of early modern Dutch society. In other words, she does not contrast the prostitutes of the past with the prostitutes of today, but she does compare their situation to their contemporaries such as the image of the upstanding Dutch burgher. The world of prostitution was an integral part of urban life in the early modern Netherlands, though they the authorities were often uneasy with its public...

[3] Réal's personal experiences as an anarchist whore are divulged through a series of interviews between her and sociologist Jean-Luc Hennig. The little black book, which is transcribed at the end of the collection, functions as a centerpiece for Hennig's three sets of interviews. Réal began keeping the book as a way of keeping track of clients, their sexual preferences, and the prices she charged. But also, she sees it as her "revenge." "When I'm miserable, at zero, I reread my little black book and laugh by myself. I say look, they're recorded in here and they don't know it. I laugh! I have a great time!" (42). For this reason, although Hennig sees the little book as a sociological text, he also recognizes it as a subversive text, one that empowers Réal.

[11] Her piece BITCH! DYKE! FAGHAG! WHORE!: The Penny Arcade Sex & Censorship Show begins with Arcade exploring sex work through two characters involved in that industry: a receptionist at a brothel whose name changes with every john who calls and Charlene, a prostitute who talks about her work as work and articulates prostitution not as a moral issue, but as an economic issue, hinting that even marriage, when it is done for money, is a form of prostitution. Charlene tells her audience: "You see, the only woman who is a whore is the one who won't admit that she's selling it, when she's selling. And the only man who is a trick is the one who won't admit that he's paying for it, when he's paying for it" (100). The remainder of the play is an excavation of Arcade's personal history as a self-proclaimed faghag and bitch, describing how she felt rejected by her "immigrant" status, and how the queer New York community of the 1970s taught her it was okay to be outspoken and opinionated. Arcade expresses the pain and outrage caused by the AIDS epidemic that devastated the queer community in the 1980s. She ends by indicting the conservative Right and feminism in her rant against censorship.
